Whitsunday Islands Tours: Sailing and Day Cruises

Whitsunday Islands tours combine beaches, reef time and island walks in different ways. Choose between a motorboat outing, a full-day cruise and a sailing catamaran.

Which Whitsunday Islands tours fit your day?

Whitsunday Islands tours are easier to compare by the way the day unfolds than by a list of beach names. A motorised inflatable-boat outing combines inner-reef snorkelling with a guided national park walk. A full-day cruise includes bus transfers and meals. A sailing catamaran puts the journey under sail alongside beach activities and fringing-reef snorkelling. All are return outings, but the balance of time aboard, time ashore and support in the water differs.

Start with the type of experience you want and the departure arrangements that fit your accommodation. This page compares those day-trip choices. For sleeping aboard, go to overnight sailing and day sails; for departures from islands, use the cruise guide. Travelling as a group with your own yacht and skipper is covered separately under private charters.

Motorboat outing with guided reef time

The inflatable-boat excursion includes Whitehaven Beach, Hill Inlet Lookout and a guided national park walk. At the inner coral reef, personalised snorkel instruction, equipment and flotation devices are included, together with a sunsuit or wetsuit. A tropical-style lunch on the beach, morning and afternoon tea and reef and island naturalist talks make this more than a transport-only ticket.

Courtesy bus pickup and drop-off from local hotels and parks are included. Allow time for that collection rather than treating the published boat departure as your pickup time. Drinks and chocolate are purchased separately on board by credit card. On statutory days off in Queensland, the check-in surcharge is AUD 20 per adult, AUD 10 per child or AUD 50 for a family of two adults and two children. Keep that cost separate from the advertised starting price when comparing dates.

A full-day cruise with transfers and lunch

The full-day eco-cruise includes return bus transfers from Airlie Beach, Cannonvale or Jubilee Pocket, lunch and morning and afternoon snacks. Snorkelling equipment here means a mask and snorkel; fins are extra. Protective clothing follows the season, with stinger suit hire in summer and wetsuit hire in winter months. Park fees and the fuel levy are included. Alcohol is extra.

This combination suits visitors who want the land transfer and meals bundled into the outing. Compare the collection area against the accommodation address, because an island stay and a mainland pickup are different starting situations. The cruise is an excursion from a base rather than an island accommodation package. The base comparison explains how staying on an island, on the mainland or aboard a boat changes the wider plan.

A sailing catamaran day

The sailing catamaran day starts at 24 The Cove Road in Airlie Beach and runs for ten hours. Included are a return sailing adventure, fringing-reef snorkelling, a barbecue lunch, soft drinks and water, morning and afternoon tea and beach activities. Beer and wine are served from 11 am. The guided Hill Inlet walk and lookout visit depend on the tide; the programme can use southern Whitehaven when tidal access prevents that visit.

Choose this option when the sailing journey itself matters. It still returns on the day, so a land-based stay remains separate. If the aim is an evening and morning afloat as well as a daytime excursion, compare the one-night and two-night trips on the sailing page instead. A day sail and an overnight voyage should not be compared only by their meal list or a single beach stop.

Departure logistics, fees and conditions

Mainland arrival through Whitsunday Coast/Proserpine Airport involves a land transfer towards Airlie Beach, taking about 40 minutes, before any separate island boat connection. Hamilton Island has its own airport. Match the booked excursion's start point to the full arrival route using the getting there guide. Leave a reserve around flight and ferry connections rather than planning an immediate boarding after arrival.

Routes respond to wind, weather and tides, and fringing-reef snorkelling is different from an outer-reef pontoon trip. Safety guidance as of 5 November 2026: stingers and strong tidal currents can occur year-round, as can sharks and crocodiles. National park waters have no lifeguards. Follow local instructions and use the protective equipment provided. Do not swim in Cid Harbour. Being on a guided outing does not remove the need to stay within personal swimming ability.

For fees, use the inclusions of the chosen excursion. Park fees, site fees and the marine Environmental Management Charge describe different charges and should not be rolled into an assumed universal island ticket. A camping permit is another separate booking. Taking a day cruise does not book a campsite or the transport needed for an independent camping stay.

Frequently asked questions

Do these tours include a journey from Hamilton Island?

The day trips compared here use mainland departure arrangements. A tour starting on Hamilton is a different product, with travel to Hamilton planned separately.

How is Hill Inlet included in the sailing day?

The guided walk and lookout visit on the sailing catamaran are tide-dependent. Southern Whitehaven is used when tidal restrictions prevent Hill Inlet access.

What should be compared beyond the starting price?

Consider the departure point, bus collection area, meals, snorkelling equipment, protective clothing and listed fees. On the inflatable-boat outing, a surcharge for statutory days off in Queensland is paid at check-in.
