Understanding the Whitsundays national park
The Whitsundays national park is formally the Whitsunday Islands National Park, a protected area encompassing 32 islands, including Whitsunday, Hook, Black and Langford. Its boundary is different from the wider tourism region. Treat a visit as a particular island landing and walk rather than expecting a single entrance that gives access to every part of the archipelago.
Boat access shapes the day. Two outings departing Hamilton Island combine a guided national park walk with beach scenery, while independent island stays require separate transport planning. Read airports and boat connections before choosing a departure. If your aim is sleeping ashore, the island camping guide explains the permit and self-sufficiency involved.

Guided island walks
Both trips leave from Hamilton and include a guided national park walk; the longer outing also includes guided reef snorkeling.

Compare the shorter beach-and-lookout outing with the full-day programme that adds guided reef snorkeling.
Guided park walks from Hamilton Island
The shorter Hamilton outing lasts four hours and includes Whitehaven Beach, Hill Inlet and its lookout, an eco host, a guided national park walk, morning or afternoon tea, a sunsuit and flotation devices. It starts on Front Street. It suits a visit built around the beach and guided walk rather than an in-water reef activity.
The full-day option lasts 6.5 hours and adds personalised guided coral reef snorkeling, a picnic lunch and both morning and afternoon tea. It also starts on Front Street, Hamilton Island. Transport to Hamilton is separate for both outings. The longer programme is useful if you want the walk and snorkeling within the same day; the shorter outing keeps the focus on the beach and lookout. These are particular guided visits, not a complete tour of the park or unrestricted entry to all its islands.
Walking: Sea Trail and the new Ngaro Track
The Ngaro Sea Trail combines walks on three national park islands linked by boat or kayak. It is not one continuous footpath between islands. The newer Ngaro Track is a different undertaking: a 32 km one-way route on Whitsunday Island, with about three days and two nights suggested for the full journey. It opened to independent walkers in April 2026, with guided walking from May 2026.
The complete route requires its own booking and operates in the April to October booking season. Boat transfers are separate. It is a demanding walk that needs independent preparation, food, equipment and water treatment. Existing short walks around Whitehaven and Hill Inlet do not require that full-track booking. Choose the style of visit first, since a guided excursion walk does not replace the arrangements for a multi-day hike.
Hook Island and Nara Inlet
Hook Island contains the Ngaro Cultural Site at Nara Inlet, with rock art and shell middens. It offers a cultural dimension to an independently planned island journey, but the Hamilton excursions described here do not promise a Hook or Nara stop. Keep an independent boat itinerary separate from the listed product routes.
As checked on 5 November 2026, the Nara audio box is out of service from 4 November to 4 December 2026; nearby paths and facilities remain open. Maintenance from 16 to 19 November 2026 can temporarily affect parts of platforms and day-use areas. These notices concern particular facilities and periods, rather than a closure of the whole island.
History and continuing Ngaro Country
The national park is Ngaro land and sea Country. Park information describes more than 9,000 years of Ngaro presence and recognises continuing connections to land, sea and sky. The new walking route was developed in collaboration with the Ngaro. Approach the landscape as living Country, with cultural places that deserve care and respect.
James Cook observed people while exploring Whitsunday Passage in 1770. This history belongs within an already inhabited region, not a story of discovering empty islands. The guided walks on the Hamilton excursions are nature visits; they should not be understood as dedicated cultural tours or visits to Naraβs rock art.
Marine park rules and safe island visits
Guidance checked on 5 November 2026 calls for current zoning and mooring information before a boat journey. Observe no-anchoring areas and reef-protection markers. Reef-care guidance updated on 3 September 2026 says not to stand on coral, make fin contact or touch and chase animals. Pets are not allowed on national park islands or beaches; drones are prohibited in QPWS camping areas.
National park beaches have no lifeguards, and currents, marine stingers, sharks and crocodiles present year-round risks. Do not swim at Cid Harbour. Mobile reception is unreliable, so carry suitable emergency communications and leave your journey plan with a reliable contact. Read weather and warnings alongside the current park notices.
Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet
For the beach and inlet viewpoint, use Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet. Maintenance at Tongue Point and Hill Inlet from 30 November to 4 December 2026 may temporarily close parts of facilities, while at least one lookout remains open. Plan around the notice rather than treating the whole area as closed.
Frequently asked questions
Does the park cover the whole tourism region?
The Whitsunday Islands National Park contains 32 islands. The wider island region is a different geographic category.
Is a Hamilton walk a Ngaro Track booking?
The excursions include a guided national park walk. The full Ngaro Track requires a separate booking and separate boat arrangements.
Do the Hamilton excursions include Hook Island?
Their listed visits centre on Whitehaven and Hill Inlet. Plan Hook Island and Nara Inlet separately rather than adding them to that itinerary.
